Dr Waleed Fawzi

I am a consultant psychiatrist and Trust Lead working in the NHS in East London. I have been working with older adults with complex mental and physical health needs, including dementias such as Alzheimer’s Disease, for over 20 years. I am experienced in working with complex medication regimes and, where appropriate, reducing polypharmacy.

After graduating from Cairo University in 1995 (honours) I was awarded a UN scholarship to study for a diploma in Geriatrics and Gerontology at the International Institute on Ageing (Dip Ger, 1998 – Magna Com Laude). I trained in psychiatry at the Behman Hospital and Cairo University (Egypt), where I completed an MSc degree in psychiatry and neurology.

I moved to London in 2003 to train in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital – Institute of Psychiatry and was elected to the membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2006 (MRCPsych). I was also awarded a Medical Doctorate (MD) in 2009 for my research on adherence to antidepressants, jointly supervised at Cairo University and the University of Liverpool.

I completed my specialist training in old age psychiatry in 2010 and started my consultant career in City and Hackney in East London NHS Foundation Trust.

I am an expert witness and have provided expert witness reports for civil and criminal proceedings (R v Billy-Joe Temple), which included fitness to plead (R v Marcantonio [2016] EWCA Crim 14, [2016]), contentious probate (Tachi v Woodward [2018] EWHC 2519), (Gardiner v Tabet & Anor [2020] EWHC 1471) contested Trusts, medical negligence and family matters in the Central Family Court. I have also been involved in high profile cases, such as the nursing care home assaults uncovered by a BBC panorama investigation (the Braintree Care Home abuse). I have presented oral evidence in court, including the Court of Appeal.
